Use with caution: Turnitin.com by Valerie Balester, Executive Director We were informed this past summer by Instructional Technology Services that students should not include identifying information on work submitted to Turnitin.com. ITS is concerned about reservations expressed by the U.S. Department of Education regarding student privacy and FERPA regulations. However, some professionals within the field of composition instruction have other concerns: plagiarism detection software like Turnitin does more damage, many of us fear, than violating privacy. One of the most influential professional organizations in composition, the Conference on College Communication and Composition (CCCC), for example, suggests that plagiarism detection software â€Å"undermines students’ authority over the uses of their own writing† (http://ccccip.org/files/CCCC-IP-PDS-Statement-final.pdf). Why, you might ask, should we care? After all, student writing is just practice writing, and it doesn’t really count for anything. It’s not like our writing, by which we make our bread and butter. But when we treat student writing as inconsequential, so do students, and the result is the careless, poorly written drivel that we have been trying to obliterate with W courses. Students who do not feel pride of ownership and control over their work will not give it the time and attention it needs to be excellent. Beyond this basic concern is the atmosphere plagiarism software detection programs can create, the expectation that students will cheat, that they are basically dishonest in their work. This atmosphere undermines trust and make writing even more distasteful. It’s just another trap, another hurdle to jump before graduation. Students are encouraged to see writing for college as a game rather than as an integral part of their education. We don’t want that. The CCCC also worries that programs like Turnitin will make college faculty complacent by shifting responsibility for detecting plagiarism onto technology. It’s only a matter of time before students learn to beat the software. I have personally tested it with my students, asking them to cheat; many of their transgressions went undetected by Turnitin. Students who run originality reports that come out clean may still have made mistakes, but if they rely too heavily on the report, they will not know it. After all, learning citation properly is far more than learning a set of rules, a style, the correct placement of commas and capital letters. Learning citation is first and foremost learning how a discipline creates and disseminates knowledge. It is subtle, takes many years to master, and is the mark of a professional.

Father Chirammel. It seems more than a concidence that when I sat down to pen my thoughts on Organ donation, specially Eye-donation, this episode is playing on my Television set.More than his entrepreneurial skill and management acumen Sri Kochouseph has been a personality for whom I have immense admiration on account of his rare humanitarian act a few years back when he donated a kidney for a needy patient and thus gave a new meaning and dimension to the much sullied and murky field of organ donation. Rev Father Chirammel was the person who prompted Sri Kochouseph to do this noble act. I am sure, the act of Sri Kochouseph would have sent out a message that one can be a donor of an organ without a ny fear of one’s own health and as a pure act of philanthropy.I am sure more and more people , healthy people, would come forward to be donors without any monetary consideration. This reminds me of the supreme act of compassion shown by the doctor-couple fromTrichy a few years back. Their only son, was fatally involved in a motor accident on the Chennai highway. The parents rushed to the spot on hearing the news, only to see their only child, a son who they thiught would continue their noble profession, was in an almost critical state, with all symptoms ofan impending brain death.The couple were flooded with phone calls from friends who offered the best of treatment if the boy could be brought to Chennai. Fully equipped ambulance was ready to carry out the job. The couple with prayers on their lips and dwindling hope in their hearts, accompanied the injured son in the vehicle, on its one hour journey. But the boy couldnot complete the journey and his brain switched off enrout e. That was a moment when any parent would stop behaving rationally or with balance.Yet it was the mother who held her mind and suggested to her husband that they hurry with the body to the nearest best hospital, so that all the vital organs of the body could be salvaged and donated to needy persons. The husband did the rest by phoning up his friends anout their decision and requesting them to make arrangements for the extraction of the vital organs from their son’s body and arranging to locate needy recepients .Cutting the long story short, today, this doctor-parents live with the satisfaction of their son still living through the four lives whom he saved in his death. The celstial level of their magnanimity is fit to be lauded in golden words. It is special persons like Sri Kochouseph and the doctors who inspire me. Of the ever increasing throng of persons needing oirgan transplants, it is the persons with Corneal blindness, who toip the list.I rememebr having read that in India there are over 5 milion persons with this type of blindness, which can be cured if they can get suitable donors, in time. The easiest part of eye donation is that the donor can pledge to donate his eyes and the actual donation needs to be done only on the death of the donor. Having been a compulsive, voluntary blood donor ever since I reached the age of 19, I was much pained, when, in 2002 I was advised that I could no longer donate blood since I was hypertensive.I had to cry a halt to my unbroken saga of 62 blood donations for 31 years. It was then that I decided to donate my eyes on my death. The only prayer I have today is that my eyes should be worthy of use at that time. This adds a major responsibility on me to keep my self safe from ailments that would affect the usability of my eyes. A contract has been awarded under competitive negotiated procedures and an unsuccessful offeror wanted to know why they were not the winner. The Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) provides an approach to this issue by offering an organized correspondence with the unsuccessful offeror and the government. An unsuccessful offeror may submit a request to the contracting officer for clarification on why they did not win the award. This request is called a debriefing. The debriefing provides feedback from the government on the unsuccessful offeror’s proposal explaining the process in depth as to why they were not selected. I consider that the management is more an art than a science. First of all a good manager have at least basic flair for leadership so that they can develop their skills. Mental Disorders Essay Summary The term mental disorder means psycological and behavioral syndromes that deviate signicantly from those typical of human beings enjoying good mental health. All that mumbo jumbo means that a person with a mental disorder was a few cards short of a full deck. This is probably not the persons fault that they are like this they were just born this way. These people are not all a like. They are not even in exact classes because all of the classes have not been seperated yet. In most cases a normal person that has no disorders is afraid of these type of people. This is because they do not want to turn out the way these people are. A common example of a mental disorder is down syndrome. There was a television program in the early 90s that featured a boy that had to live with this terrifying disorder. This show was very inspirational for all people with disorders. The boys name was Corky who fought all aspects of the disorder. Them being from physical triumphs to just !everyday kids harras sing him at school. The show was taken off the air in 1993 because of sponsers. Records of types of disorders are unknown along with many of other records of treatments to people inflicted with a disorder. This is mainly because in the early 1900s people thought that people with disorders were just stupid and they did not investigate further into the matter. The quanity of people that have a disorder is unknown. There is an estimated guess that 15% of the U.S. population has some sort of disorder but that is not factual. Anxiety disorder include fear of leaving home and parents, excessive shrinking from contact with strangers, and excessive, unfocused worrying and fearful behavior. Paranoid DisorderThe central feature of the paranoid disorders in a persons dilusion, for instance that he or she is being persecuted or conspored against. In other form, the dilusion consists of unreasonsably jealousy. the person maybe resentful, angry, sometimes violent, socially an outcast or isolated, seclusive, and eccentric. The disorder usually starts in middle or late adult life and can be seriously disrupting to social and maritalrelationship.Anxiety DisordersAnxiety is the predominant symptom in two conditions: panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. In phobias and obsessive-compulsive disorders, also considered anxiety disorders, fear is experienced when an individual tries to master other symptoms. A phobia is an irrational fear of a specific object, activity, or situation that is so intense that it interferes with everday life. Obsessions are repetitive thoughts, images, ideas, or impulses that make no sense to the person. He or she can fear being unable to avoid committing a violent act, for example, or worry over whether some small duty has been performed. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors performed dutifully to try to ward off some future event. examples of such behavior include repeated washing of the hands or counting and recounting ones belongings. SchitzophreniaThe specific term for a shcitzo is a group of serios disorders beginning usually in adolescence or young adulthood. This mental disorder has a lot of different symptoms but the main ones are diturbances in thought, perception emotion and interpersonal relation s. What this disorder basically means is that the person is split minded but by no means mean they have a split personality. Split personality means that the one person acts like two people or several people. This disorder always occurs before a person hits middle age. All scientists agree that there is no single cause for schitzophrenia. What is known is that LSD is one of the major causes. There is a better chance for an offspring from a parent that has the disease is more likely to get the disorder than any other Joe thats a parent does not have this horrible disorder. Schitzophrenia is has a greater chance in twins more than a single baby. The chances increase to about 35 to 58%. And that statistic takes me to my example of schitzophrenia. His name is Jimmy Sanders. If a person knew him well like I do they would just call him Cat. He is definetly a Schitzo. He dresses like a hippy! His attire is made up of the following: Red or black bandana, black straight leg jeans, white unde r shirt, usually a red, black, or green silk shirt buttoned half way up, jean jacket or trench coat, black combat boots, wallet with a chain, and the best of all a red silk sash. Cat also has many accesories tha!t he struts with they are: Boom box, metal detector, and the coolest bike ever seen it is a very highly modified shwinn. It has a long, skinny body like the Cat, with a 10-speed tire on the back with a small scooter tire on the front. The exterior has a shiny chrome finish, the bike also has some sort of skull mounted to the front of it. Now if anyone would own that much weird stuff they have to have a few screws lose in their head. from long days of observing Jimmy and his behaviors I have noticed that the definition of a schitzo sums Jimmy right up. One day one can talk to Cat and not have no problems with him. Like one day I was sitting on a buddy of mines front porch waiting for Cat to walk by. Finally Jimmy walked by and I said, Hey. Cat said,Got any guns for sell? My b uddy replied,No, I just bought a 357.Cat said, That all get the job done. Now that was a pleasant conversation with Jimmy. So that scenario represents what I will call Bluegill #1. Now deep down in Jimmys heart there is a mean side. One day down at the old football field in the small town of Clinton Earnie Simpson was doing a little running. Cat strutted down to the field and started doing some detecting with his fine metal detector. Earnie went over to Cat and said, Finding anything? Jimmy grabbed his knife and waved it in Earnies face. Cat roared,You know there is a jail in this town. Earnie said,Uh, yal.Cat screemed, Ya wanted go there?Earnie replied, What for?Harrassment roared Cat. Earnie took of because he thought Cat was going to kill him with his knife. Now that situation showed the mean side of Jimmy Sanders. That mean side I will call Bluegill #2. So the short term for schitzophrenia is Split Minded and that is definetly Jimmy. Jimmy has two mindes the nice Cat (Bluegill # 1) is when Jimmy is seen with not so weird clothes on and he usually is not talking to himself or nonliving objects. Jimmy mean mind (Bluegill #2) is when one sees Jimmy talking to trees and other nonliving objects. This is known because when schitzos are really messed in the head on one certain day they are meaner than usuall. Schitzophrenia can be worse one day more than an other. So from all that I was trying to get that schitzophrenia occurs in twins more than single offsprings that there is some chance that the hippy might just possibly have an identicle twin.
